Total carbs 7g per drink

Enjoy a cool, refreshing alcohol-free melon ball drink on a hot summer day

This refreshing drink is a great mocktail for non-drinkers and sober curious at a party. Add cream to make it into a matcha latte "bubble" tea without the boba.

Ingredients you'll need

matcha green tea powder

What is matcha?

Matcha is powdered green tea leaves. These tea leaves are specially grown to maximize chlorophyll production giving matcha a vibrant green color, bright flavor and packed with nutrients and antioxidants.

water

You'll need water to make tea. This might sound obvious to you, but I once had to explain this to someone who never had to cook before. We all have to start somewhere.

honeydew melon

Honeydew melon is relatively low in carbs at 16g per cup. Research has indicated that it can also help diabetics with blood sugar control.

Equipment you'll need

A melon baller and a pretty glass.

How to make melon balls

Some stores carry frozen or prepared melon balls. More often than not you will need to make them yourself. All you need is a melon baller. Just scoop the flesh with a melon baller like ice cream.

Make ahead

You can make the melon balls ahead of time and keep them in the fridge for up to 3 days. Or you can freeze them. Frozen melon balls double as ice balls.

To freeze melon balls

Arrange them in a single layer on parchment paper on a tray or baking sheet in the freezer for 1-2 hours. When they are frozen transfer them to a freezer bag, squeeze out the air and seal. They will keep frozen for 12 months.

Serving suggestions

  • Use seltzer water instead of still water for sparkle.
  • Add a splash of lime juice.
  • Sweeten it with a teaspoon of honey. Add 6 grams of carbs if you add honey.
  • Add heavy cream to make it into a matcha latte "bubble tea" with melon balls instead of boba.
  • Add an ounce of Midori, melon liqueur, to make it into an adult beverage. Add 11 grams of carbs.
  • Add an ounce of vodka, gin or tequila. No extra carbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does matcha have caffeine?

Yes, but less than coffee or black tea.
