How to steam eggs

Steaming eggs is faster than boiling eggs because you don't have to submerge the eggs in water. Therefore you don't have to wait for lots of water to boil. It only takes a few short minutes to bring a cup of water to full boil.

How long to steam eggs

12 minutes.

Avoid going longer than that or you'll end up with overcooked eggs.

If you've ever had bad smelling hard boiled eggs with green rings around the yolks, they were overcooked. Stick to the cook times and stop the cooking process with a quick dunk in an ice water bath.

A perfectly cooked hard boiled egg has a solid, yellow yolk.

🍽 How to serve

Hard boiled eggs are delicious plain, sprinkled with seasonings, as deviled eggs, sliced over toast, or added to soups, stews and salads.

Meal prep

You can make hard boiled eggs ahead of time for meal prep and use them in all kinds of recipes for meals and snacks throughout the week. Pack them with veggie sticks and cheese for a picnic!

🥡 How to store

Hard boiled eggs keep well in the fridge, so long as you don’t crack the shells. Store them unpeeled, in a covered container or plastic bag, in the fridge for up to a week.

Hard boiled eggs should not be consumed if they have been sitting at room temperature for over two hours.

How to freeze

You can freeze unpeeled eggs for up to 12 months.

  • Do not peel.
  • Allow eggs to cool completely.
  • Place in a single layer in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag and freeze.

💭 Top tips

Follow these cooking tips for best results:

  • There is no need to add vinegar or baking soda to soften the egg shell. The steam helps the egg shells peel right off.
  • If you don't have ice, just run the eggs under cold tap water when finished cooking.
  • When buying eggs check uncooked eggs for cracks before buying. If you find any raw cracked eggs after you get them home, throw them away.
  • You can use fresh eggs. It is a myth that you need to use older eggs to make easy peel eggs.
